This week’s stargazers special treat: the planet This week’s stargazers special treat: the planet Mars appears amongst hundreds of stars.

In the next few nights, the red planet will move across the open star cluster resemblance to a swarm of bees hence its name β€œthe Beehive” or Messier 44 in the constellation Cancer.

There are 1000 young stars in the Beehive cluster formed 600 million years ago and located about 600 light-years away from us – which means the star light you see is 600 years back in time.

The spectacular celestial conjunction will be best viewed with binoculars or a low-powered telescope in the western evening sky a couple of hours after sunset.

Hunting the 39-hour old crescent πŸŒ™ Moon in dayl Hunting the 39-hour old crescent πŸŒ™ Moon in daylight is pretty challenging due to glaring sunlight.

Photos show Zulkaedah 1444 waxing crescent from Tutong, Brunei Darussalam at 15:26 today, May 21, 2023:
[1] Original raw footage;
[2] A refractor pointing at the Moon (not visible) which is closed to the Sun;
[3] Edge detection/stacked to reveal clearly the crescent;
[4] Enhanced image;
[5] Processed crescent image.

Look towards northwestern sky later. You can catch easily with the naked eyes this young moon just below Venus after sunset tonight.

All shadows in the world will point to kiblat on M All shadows in the world will point to kiblat on May 28.

In a year, the sun’s position can be used to determine the precise bearing of the kiblat on two occasions.

The sun ascends to a position directly above Makkah twice:
β€’ May 28 at 5:16 p.m.; and
β€’ July 16 at 5:27 p.m. (Brunei Time).

If you face the sun on these exact days & times, you will be facing the Kaabah itself.

The phenomenon when the Sun at zenith known as Istiwa Adzam can be utilised by Muslims to easily determine or re-check the kiblat through the shadows of vertical objects (such as house side wall, pillars, stick etc).
