BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Isnin, 5 Ogos. – Kesatuan Astronomi Antarabangsa (International Astronomical Union – IAU) menganugerahkan Negara Brunei Darussalam sebuah planet dan sebutir bintang induknya pada 2 Ogos 2019 untuk diberikan nama yang sesuai oleh rakyat negara ini.
Pihak IAU memperuntukkan sebuah planet dan bintangnya kepada setiap negara di dunia untuk dinamakan.
Brunei Darussalam turut diberikan sebutir bintang HD 179949 dan sebuah planet gergasi bergas (exoplanet HD 179949b) yang terletak dalam buruj Sagittarius untuk dinamakan.
Bandar Seri Begawan – People of Brunei will have the
opportunity to name a selected exoplanet and its host star to commemorate the
100th-anniversary celebration of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
Currently there are a total of
more than 4,000 confirmed planets that orbit stars outside the solar system
known as exoplanets. Most of these exoplanets have no proper names.
NameExoWorlds offers the opportunity for all countries
in the world including Brunei Darussalam to give a name to one exoplanet and
its hosting star.
Brunei Darussalam will determine Hari Raya Aidiladha with a moon sighting of month of Zulhijjah 1440 Hijrah nationwide on 29 Zulkaedah 1440 corresponding to 1st August 2019 at several designated areas in the three districts.
In the Brunei Muara District, the moon sighting will take place at the DST Tower of DST Headquarters building, Tungku Highway, Bukit Agok Jerudong, Tanjung Batu and Kampung Sabun. Meanwhile in the Belait District, Bukit Lumut and Bukit Ambog di Tutong District. The outcome of the moon sighting will be broadcast through Radio Television Brunei as soon as the result is received.

THE scene was set during the wee hours of yesterday morning for Bruneians to witness one of astronomy’s rarest phenomena, the clear skies providing a magnificent view of the much-anticipated partial lunar eclipse.
The cosmic spectacle occurred just before the Moon set, when our natural satellite was partially covered by Earth’s shadow.
A total of 9,306 viewers watched the live Facebook feed provided by the Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam (PABD), broadcast from the Mini Observatory in Kampong Keriam, Tutong District.
