Tonight, May 31, 2026, Brunei experiences a rare "Blue Micromoon", the second full moon of the month & the smallest, faintest full moon of the year.
Blue Moon: The 2nd full moon in a calendar month.
Micromoon: Occurs near apogee, making it look ~6% smaller than average.
Its color & appearance remain unchanged; the rarity lies in the calendar alignment and orbital mechanics.

The Sun stood directly above the Kaaba today, May 28, 2026, creating a rare overlap between the annual zero‑shadow event and the peak of Hajj and Eid al‑Adha. At local noon in Mecca, the Sun reached a perfect zenith - the phenomenon known as Istiwa A’dzom - allowing regions in daylight to see the Sun aligned precisely toward the Qibla.
In Brunei, accurate Qibla calibration was possible at around 5:16 pm local time. Using a vertical rod, synchronized time, and clear skies, observers could trace the shadow’s direction to determine the true Qibla.
An additional calibration window will occur in mid‑July, on July 16.

Official: The hilal for Zulhijjah 1447 was not sighted this evening, May 17, 2026.
Therefore, the 1st of Zulhijjah 1447H in Brunei Darussalam will begin on Tuesday, 19th May 2026. Consequently, Hari Raya Aidiladha (10 Zulhijjah) will fall on Thursday, 28th May 2026.

The journey into the deep dark sky has officially begun! 53 adventurers in a convoy of 25 vehicles from Brunei Overland Expedition Group BOEG, BNSTYLE 4WD and Jimny Brunei, set off to experience the breathtaking brilliance of a Bortle Class 2 quality sky in Brunei yesterday, May 16, 2026.
From the winding roads to the setting sun, Day 1 has already delivered incredible camaraderie and unforgettable moments. We are officially under the stars!

Zulhijjah 1447 New Moon Crescent
��The sighting of the Zulhijjah 1447H hilal in Brunei is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2026, evening, at which time the crescent will be more than 14 hours old with an illumination of 0.61% at sunset.
According to astronomical calculation, the sighting is expected to meet the following:
Positioned at an altitude of 6° and an elongation of 9°, the moon sits above the Neo-MABIMS Criteria threshold and the Danjon Limit, making it technically sightable for 30 minutes.
With a visibility value of V=2.7, observers will likely need optical aid to successfully spot the crescent against the bright horizon, provided clear sky.
Note: These figures are predictions; the official start date will be formally announced following the actual sighting by the officials.

Rare Comet Sighting In Brunei Darussalam
The evening sky featured a stunning appearance of Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) last night on May 05, 2026. Two weeks post-perihelion, it’s a naked-eye object at magnitude 5.3.
In the wide-field photo, the comet sits in Eridanus near Sirius and Rigel, with Venus reflecting over the sea in the west. Close-up photos show a striking tail and brilliant coma as it begins a 170,000-year journey back to the outer solar system.
