The astronomical conjunction or New Moon phase will occur on Friday, April 01,2022 at 2:24 pm (Brunei Time).

The infographic shows the position of the Moon crescent relative to the Sun’s position about the Western horizon at local sunset, and its predicted visibility based on New Criterion for Lunar Crescent (2005) by Mohammad SH. Odeh. Also presented on the graph are the minimum lines of different criterion to start the new Hijrah month adopted by different country/organization.

Above: Hilal visibility prediction for selected cities on April 01, 2022. (By Hazarry Hj Ali Ahmad)

Sighting the new crescent on April 01, 2022, is shown in the chart for selected cities. In summary, the Moon is below the Danjon’s Limit and not sufficiently illuminated in order to be seen as a crescent from many region globally. The moon crescent may be seen with difficulty in Hawaii and westernmost part of the world.

These are pre-calculated data, the actual start of the fasting month of Ramadan should be referred to your country’s official authority.

Bandar Seri Begawan – Members of the Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam were at Bukit Agok, Tutong, for a practical session to look for the new crescent moon (hilal ~11 hour old) this evening of Sunday, May 5th in anticipation of the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Members had the opportunities to learn setting up telescopes properly, scopes alignment to the sun or other bright objects, photographing and tracking the new moon. The western sky was pretty clear at sunset, and a sunspot was also visible on the sun.

By the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Brunei Darussalam will begin fasting this Tuesday (07 May 2019). The announcement on the moon-sighting was aired on Radio and Television Brunei this evening after officials failed to sight the new moon.

International as well as Brunei report and data of the new moon observation was shared to The Islamic Crescents Observation Project (ICOP) via http://www.astronomycenter.net/icop/ram40.html

Bandar Seri Begawan – The official first day of Ramadan falls tomorrow (27th May 2017) in Brunei Darussalam as the moon crescent of Ramadan was sighted by the officials (of the new moon sighting committee) in this country.

The members of Brunei Darussalam Astronomical Society organized the crescent sighting at Bukit Agok in Tutong. It was attended by 30 members including the public.

In the afternoon, the weather was cloudy on the western horizon at sun set but Jupiter was clearly seen at around zenith. Only at after 25 minutes after sunset that the ultra-thin crescent (of 14.9 hour old) was firstly visible through CCD (Digital Camera) then sighted through 120mm refractor. Nationally, this was the youngest new moon sighted and broke the previous national record (15.5 hour old) in 2015 Apr 19.

PABD findings from this afternoon observation was also reported to the International Astronomical Centre (ICOP) via this site icoproject.org

Abstract

There are various methods used to determine the arrival of Ramadan (fasting) and Syawal in South East Asia. Malaysia and Indonesia use the rukyah (sighting of the moon) and hisab (mathematical calculations), Singapore uses the hisab while Brunei only uses the rukyah method. These differences are due to the different basis for using a certain method to determine the arrival of Ramadan and Syawal. The basis here refers to religious references and forms of istidlal (inferences). The question is, what religious references are used to substantiate the adoption of the rukyah method in Brunei? What is their form of istidlal based on the religious references? To answer all these questions this study has two objectives. Firstly, it intends to determine the religious references that act as the basis for using the rukyah method in Brunei. Secondly, to analyse the different forms of istidlal based on the religious references. In order to achieve these objectives, this qualitative study used library research and expert interview methods for collecting data. All the data were analysed using the content analysis method. Lastly, this study concluded that religious references from the al-Qur’an and Hadith used as a basis for applying the rukyah method in Brunei is similar to the religious references used as a basis for applying rukyah and hisab in other South East Asian countries. The only difference is the various forms of istidlal.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="902" height="628" class="size-full wp-image-1541" alt="The moon's position on June 16, 2015 from Brunei at sun set.
In conclusion, the moon is a waning crescent, that is not a New Moon, and not observable as it sets earlier before the Sun goes down. However, the starting date of fasting in Brunei will depend on the official announcement on that evening.
