Horned Comet in Bruneian skies

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is nicknamed “devil comet” for its unusual pointy shape. Just a week before its closest approach to the Sun (perihelion), rhe comet was photographed last night, April 14, 2024, from Tutong, which evidently displayed two distinct “horns” of gas and ice.

Comet 12P is a Halley-type periodic comet with an orbital period of about 71.3 years. In 2024, the icy wanderer is speeding through the inner solar system and expected to reach its maximum brightness, potentially becoming visible to the naked eye during the perihelion.

However, bright twilight and moonlight may wash out the comet’s brilliance, so skywatchers may need binoculars or telescopes to catch a glimpse.

Last Chance to see Comet Pons-Brooks at its best b

Last Chance to see Comet Pons-Brooks at its best before vanishes until 2095

The periodic Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is currently passing near the Sun, and it will come as close as 116.8 million km to the sun on April 21, 2024.

It is now viewable over in the west horizon in the evening twilight from Brunei Darussalam and will reach as bright as a stellar magnitude 4.0 which is within naked eye limit.

The extraterrestrial object should appear as a fuzzy green blob with a hazy tail as viewed from a small telescope or binoculars.

Wait for darkness (after 7.15 pm), it is a simple cosmic target to be photographed - Get out your tripod, attach a medium lens and point the camera towards the west horizon.

From the northern hemisphere, comet 12P will remain viewable for the next 1 or 2 weeks before disappearing into the bright sun’s glare and proceeding into the southern sky.

By May, the giant comet will fade rapidly as it moves towards the outer solar system and won't approach the Earth again in the next 71 years.

Daytime Crescent of Syawal was first spotted from Brunei Darussalam today, April 10, 2024, at 4 pm.

The 1.7 day old crescent was 3% lit and separated at 21° to the sun.

The Islamic day of 1st Syawal 1445H in Brunei begins at sunset (maghrib) today and ends at the next sunset.

A Cosmic Hari Raya Tonight! Skywatchers in Brunei

A Cosmic Hari Raya Tonight!

Skywatchers in Brunei will be treated to a beautiful spectacle at nightfall today, on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, when the young 40-hour old Syawal crescent moon aligns itself to the upper left of the bright planet Jupiter in the western sky.

If the sky is clear, the celestial pair, which may be seen together with binoculars, will be visible when the sky gets a little darker. To the 10 degrees northeast of them is the nebulous Pleiades star cluster, also known as Messier 45 (Seven Sisters).

Look for Earthshine on the moon right after sunset. The eerie radiance on the night side of the lunar surface is due sunlight gets reflected off of Earth and back toward the moon, a phenomenon known as the ashen glow which usually occurs within a day or two after New Moon.

Once the sky darkens (around 7.15 pm), look for the small fuzzy dot of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks next to the 4%-lit crescent, and less than a binoculars’ field (4 degrees) below of Jupiter. Comet Pons-Brooks, a visitor to our Solar System in every 71 years, is currently bright enough that you can get great shots with a small digital camera (even on a smartphone). Sadly, the comet can only be seen for about 1 hour in the evening sky before it sinks below the horizon after sunset.

The visibility of the new crescent Moon (hilal) depends on specific criteria. Some of the key factors are (a) Sun Position: The Sun must be below the horizon - Darkness is necessary to spot the slender sliver of the new crescent; (b) Moon Position: The Moon needs to be above the horizon; (c) Angular Separation/Elongation: The Moon and the Sun should be sufficiently apart in the sky; and (d) Sky Condition: Weather and the location are essentially affecting visibility.

The birth of the new moon or “Ijtimak” will occur on 09 April 2024 at 02:23 am. During this invisible phase, the Moon can not be seen as the alignment of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth leaves the side of the Moon that faces Earth in darkness. The conjunction also coincides with a total solar eclipse (that is not visible from Brunei), this is the only moment when the lunar disk can be seen silhouetted against the Sun. Only hours after conjunction, when the Moon elongation gets larger, that the youngest possible crescent moon can be spotted on the western horizon after sunset.

The chart provides astronomical data, especially the moon parameters and its position in the sky at local sunsets to aid observers for moon-watching. The table displays the different crescent moon visibility for Syawal 2024 based on popular modern criteria showing the likelihood of observing the young lunar crescent on the evenings of the 09th10th April 2024 in Brunei.

Brunei Darussalam only practices the rukyah hilal method involving sightings the new crescent moon after sunset on hijri day 29 to ascertain the beginning and conclusion of each significant Islamic months (Ramadan, Syawal and Zulhijjah).

[IMPORTANT] The official date of Aidilfitri in Brunei Darussalam will be declared by the government based on the result of 1445H Syawal hilal observations to be perform on Tuesday, 29 Ramadan (April 09, 2024).

Old Cresent Moon of Ramadan

The Dark Moon, or astronomically defined as last visible crescent of a waning Moon, was observed this morning today, Sunday, 27 Ramadan 1445 (April 07, 2024).

It was observed shortly after sunrise, signaling the end of the lunar cycle and soon bids farewell to Ramadan.

The 27.5-day old moon appeared above the eastern horizon, at 24° separation with the sun, 4% illuminated and hardly visible to the naked eye.

In the next 2 days, the moon will reach conjunction or Ijtimak on Tuesday, 29 Ramadan, April 09, at 02:21 a.m., coinciding with a total solar eclipse that is not visible in Brunei.

Keep an eye out for Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks – it may brighten to naked eye visibility as it arrives perihelion in April.

Comet Pons Brooks will be at its closest distance of 116.8 millions km to the Sun on Sunday, April 21 2024. It thus reached its maximum brightness of magnitude 4.2, expected visible to the unaided eye.

Comets are so unpredictable for sudden flare-ups in brightness, so you might get a chance to catch sight for this spectacular show.

From Brunei Darussalam, the comet will set in the west-northwest, hovering about 10 degree above the horizon in the evening twilight all through April.

Like other comets, 12P/Pons-Brooks is made of a mixture of ice and rocky materials. As it approaches the Sun, these volatile matters transform to gas and dust which cause an expansive cloud (coma) and a distinctive tail.

By the end of April, it then fades very rapidly and moves back out into space. Comet Pons-Brooks will take another 71 years for it to complete another full journey around the sun – a once in a lifetime experience to see the cosmic wanderer!
